He was first introduced after Long Qi killed Ning Xin and Ning Rui wanted to get revenge. He was sent to the Lower Realm to get Ning Rui to send the disciples and teachers of Zephyr Academy to Heaven's End Cliff to find the Dark Emperors Tomb. After Ning Rui enticed him with Jun Wu Xie's improved Spirit Healing Technique he killed Fan Qi and framed it on Fan Jin (who he made into an idiot by hitting him on the head twice).
On the day Zephyr Academy was to set off to Heaven's End Cliff Fan Zhuo came to the gates and exposed that Fan Jin was actually Fan Qi's blood related son and had no reason to kill Fan Qi. Hua Yao (who was disguised as Fan Jin) appeared before everyone and also cooperated with Fan Zhuo further exposing their plot. Seeing there was no other way he asked Jun Wu Xie if she was the one who foiled their plans behind the scenes and tried to attack her but was thoroughly beaten by Ye Sha. Other members of Middle Realm (assuming Spirit Void Temple but it wasn't clearly stated) showed up taking him away before Ye Sha could kill him.
After Su Ya injured a disciple of the Blood Fiend Palace he came to Cloudy Brook Academy under the guise of bringing medicine to him, but was told to leave after the disciple showed any progress of healing.[1] When he learned about Jun Wu he asked Tian Ze to let him talk to Su Ya and after failing to drag Jun Wu Xie into the conflict he left the Cloudy Brook Academy.
During an event to celebrate the birthday of the Palace Lord of All Life Palace he threatened to beat up Zhuge Yin because he tried flirting with Gu Xin Yan. Later he was tricked to go look for Zhuge Yin so Jun Wu Xie could kill Zhuge Yin afterwards and plant all the suspicion on him to create more turmoil between the Twelve Palaces.
At the Summit between the Twelve Palaces he was given to the Palace Lord of The Dragon Slayer Palace to be slowly tortured. After Jun Wu Xie made her move against the Twelve Palaces he stood by to watch the slaughter with no intention to involve himself but after Gu Xin Yan jumped in front the blade meant to kill her Father he and and his subordinates attacked Jun Wu Xie (who was being protected by Ye Gu). When Jun Wu Yao appeared he instantly killed the subordinates and forced him to use a technique to shift his soul to another place.

He has been tortured by every single torture tool in the Blood Fiend Palace, which is probably the cause of his extremely twisted and brutal personality.
He is very unsettling especially for those he deems unimportant or his enemies as he always has a cheerful smile around them.
His mother was of the Nine Temples, the Young Lady Lord of the Spirit Void Temple and was recognized as the most beautiful person throughout the entire Nine Temples and Twelve Palaces. Gu Yu was one of her pursuers but changed personality immediately upon marrying her. She ended up passing a silent death, almost unbeknownst to the world.
It is revealed in Ch-3074 that Gu Ying is actually an avatar of the God of Destruction (His Lord).
